Eastern High School
Eastern High School, began as Capitol Hill High on the third and fourth floors of a grammar school in 1890, Opened at its current location in 1923, Eastern High School was failing and selected as a DCPS pilot for school turnaround in recent years.
After completing a $77 million renovation, Eastern re-opened as a "re-imagined" school in 2011-2012 Eastern High School. Designed with extensive input from alumni and the current and future Eastern communities, Eastern is now a newly restored, state-of the art campus committed to setting a course for excellence that builds upon rich traditions and provides a rigorous, well-rounded high school experience for every student. Whereas only 330 first-time ninth grade students were enrolled for this "inaugural" school year, Eastern will continue to grow by one grade each year. Eastern will become the second D.C. public school to offer the International Baccalaureate diploma program, and starting with the Class of 2015, the school intends to graduate 100% of its students.
Literacy is a key indicator of educational progress.
Starting with the 2011-2012 school year, Companies for Causes has established a formal partnership to provide resources, volunteers, and strategic support to help Eastern High School advance its goal to get all of students meeting or exceeding reading standards on the DC CAS by graduation. To start, financial support will immediately be provided to purchase much needed books and resources for both individual classroom libraries and new media center.
